4 Extremely Easy Tips To Declutter Your Bathroom Closet

It’s easy to put off the task of decluttering your bathroom closet because it doesn’t take much time. You don’t feel the urgency to get rid of unwanted items sitting in your bathroom closet because you feel you can do it any day. And although you’ve been planning to do it for a long time, it never gets done with.

The one thing that my decluttering journey has taught me is that it’s as difficult to start a small decluttering project as it is to do a big one. While the bigger decluttering projects make you feel overwhelmed, the smaller ones make you procrastinate more.

If you want to declutter the closet in your bathroom, the best way to go is to think of it as a very urgent task. I personally find it to be the fastest and easiest task. It’s a matter of a few minutes before you give yourself a bathroom closet that only has items that are useful and make your life easier.

Here’s a few very simple tips that can help you declutter the bathroom closet in less than 10 minutes:

1. Gather The Supplies

Your bathroom closet might be having many items that are either trash or just don’t belong there. Make sure that you don’t start decluttering without having these necessary supplies by your side:

  • A box labelled as ‘Keep’ for things that need to stay
  • A box labelled as ‘Donate’ for items that can be donated
  • A box labelled as ‘Give away’ for things that can be passed on to friends and family
  • A box labelled as ‘Relocate’ for items that belong in a different room of your house
  • A trash bag for items that need to be thrown away

2. Start By Sorting Through The Daily Use Items

Items like toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, bath essentials, towels, etc. are required on a daily basis and hence should be decluttered on priority. Here’s how you can sort through these items:

  • Towels and Washcloths – Go through the pile of towels and washcloths and get rid of the ones that are stained, threadbare or ripped. You can either choose to toss these items in the ‘Donate’ box that can be dropped at an animal shelter or you can use them as a cleaning rag for your home or car.

Make sure that you set a limit on the number of towels you keep in your bathroom closet. This can be twice the number of members in your family or more if needed. For our family of six, we usually stick to having 8 bath towels and 2 hand towels.

  • Makeup And Skincare – Any makeup or skincare product that is past its expiry or smells odd or is contaminated should go straight to the trash. Any makeup product that you haven’t used in the last 1 year or so should be tossed into the trash bag. For a detailed post on how to declutter your makeup and skincare, click here
  • Mouth Cleaning Essentials – Get rid of toothbrushes that are showing signs of wear and tear and replace them with fresh ones. Trash the empty toothpaste tubes and mouth wash bottles.
  • Bath Essentials – Throw away old and empty bottles of shampoo, lotion, body wash, face wash and other bath essentials. If there are duplicates of these products, shift them away to a different closet in your house so that they don’t end up clogging your bathroom closet.
  • Hair Care Appliances – If there is a hair dryer or a hair straightener that is broken or unusable, get rid of it on an immediate basis.
  • Medicines – Medicines and syrups that have expired can be dangerous if consumed. It’s best if you go through them one by one and trash the ones that are unfit for consumption. Also look for the medicines that are not useful for you but can be donated to a charity or dropped off at a donation centre.
  • Miscellaneous Items – You may find over-stretched scrunchies, broken hair clips, broken nail clippers and blunt shaving razors. Trash them straightaway.

3. Sort Through The Items That Are Used Weekly

There are many items in your bathroom closet that aren’t used on a daily basis. Make sure that you have a separate closet for these items so that you won’t have to declutter it as frequently as the closet that has items of daily use.

  • Cleaning Supplies – Trash the bathroom cleaning supplies that are old. Get rid of empty bottles of toilet cleaner and broken cleaning brushes.
  • First Aid Supplies – If your bathroom closet has first aid items that have been lying unwrapped or open, get rid of them. Look for any antiseptic liquids or bandages that might not be fit for use and get rid of them. Keep only the items that are sterile, uncontaminated and have a recent manufacturing date.

4. Use Bathroom Closet Organizers

Get a towel rack fitted on your bathroom wall to free up some space in the closet. Get a makeup organizer for all your skincare and makeup essentials. For your unopened toothbrushes and toothpastes, you can use a mason jar that can be kept in the bathroom closet. I recently got a tray organizer for bath soaps, hair accessories, nail clipper and other small items.

Get a tension rod fitted in your bathroom closet to utilize the vertical space. You can put some of the bathroom cleaning supplies on this tension rod and even hang towels to free up some floor space in the closet.

Now that you have all the necessary tips at your disposal, it’s time to pick your decluttering tools and get going. Also, make sure that you declutter your bathroom closet as frequently as possible because it’s prone to attract clutter quicker than you can imagine.
