8 Decluttering Goals To Achieve By The End Of This Year

Goals play a significant role in decluttering, just as they do in making your life meaningful. You can’t start decluttering your home without having a clear picture in mind about what you want to achieve with your efforts. Maybe you want your home to have only the stuff you absolutely love being around. Or maybe you are just tired of living in a home that is stuffed with clutter and want it to look tidier.

Now you may wonder why it’s so important to have decluttering goals and what difference it makes. And you are probably right because you are still going to achieve something even if you are getting rid of stuff without a goal in mind. But having goals will add a direction to your decluttering efforts. With goals in mind, you won’t just be getting rid of stuff because it wasn’t useful. You would rather have a clear picture of what you are trying to achieve with it.

For instance, if your decluttering goal is to make your bedroom a chaos-free space to sleep in, you will have clarity on what you need to do to achieve that goal – clear off the surface of your nightstand, pick random items of laundry and take them to the laundry room, eliminate visual clutter in your bedroom. You won’t be running off to kitchen to declutter the cabinets and drawers because you know that it won’t be contributing anything to your goal. Having goals is essential to make sure that you do only the tasks that are vital to achieving it.

I’ve listed some decluttering goals that you can try and achieve this year. Of course, you can add your own goals to this list and work towards achieving them:

1. To Keep Only The Things You Love

One of the best goals you can aim for is to get rid of everything that you don’t love. There may be clothes in your closet that you don’t like to wear or feel good in. You might have been holding on to bakeware in the hopes of taking up baking as a hobby but you know that it’s not going to happen anytime soon.

Getting rid of stuff that doesn’t make you happy will help you appreciate the things that you love. It will also make it easier for you to clean, organize and maintain the limited stuff that you’re left with.

2. To Not Feel Stressed By Clutter

Clutter builds up in your mind and body just as fast as it does in your home. Look around in your bedroom to figure out why you haven’t been getting a sound sleep during the night. Maybe there are items on the surface of your nightstand that don’t belong there. Or maybe there are random items of laundry lying everywhere in the bedroom that are disrupting your sleep.

If you feel that the enormous amount of clutter in your home is adding up to your stress, you can declutter your home with a goal to create a calm and relaxed living space.

3. To Have More Space

If clutter is making it harder for you to move around in your own house and your closets are throwing out piles of clothes in your face every time you open them, maybe it’s time to clear the clutter in your house. Your goal in this case should be to create enough space for your stuff to breathe and for you to be able to move around freely.

4. To Make It Easy To Clean Your Home

Clutter makes it harder for you to access and clean the hidden corners of the house which often end up being a home to critters, spiders and cockroaches. When you have less stuff to deal with and every item in your home has a space of its own, it becomes easier to keep your home organized and tidy.

5. To Be In Control Of Your Space

If your living space is so full of clutter that it starts dictating your moods and emotions, take it as a sign that your home needs a heavy purge. Maybe there are too many sentimental items taking up your emotional energy or you always feel exhausted trying to find objects in your house. Decluttering unwanted items will help ensure that the control of your life lies in your own hands.

6. To Be Able To Find Things When You Need Them

If your home is full to the gills with stuff that you don’t love or need, you will have a hard time finding items that are actually useful and add value to your life.

Do you find yourself wasting a good few minutes every morning trying to find a perfect dress in a closet full of junk?

Is it hard for you to find a nice comforter even though your linen closet has dozens of them?
If yes, then decluttering might be the answer to your problem.

7. To Have A Tidier Space

To have a clean and tidy living space is a goal that almost each one of us is trying to achieve. Even if your home is spacious enough to store all the clutter and there is enough space to move around, it might still end up looking cluttered due to things that are lying out of place. It’s normal for the flat surfaces in your home to attract clutter and for the cabinets to become a dumping ground for duplicates. So make sure that you always work towards the goal of having a tidier looking space by putting things away to their rightful place.

8. To Not Feel Embarrassed By Surprise Guest Visits

Your home ends up representing you as a brand for people who come over as guests. A cleaner looking space always attracts visitors and an untidy space repels them. If you want to be in the former category, your decluttering goal should be to escape the embarrassment if people pop around without notice.

Goals give a vision to your home and help in ensuring that you stick to that vision. It’s like knowing what kind of energy you want your home to exude and working towards achieving that. Your goal won’t just ensure that you declutter with a purpose in your mind but will also help in keeping your home clutter-free even after you are done decluttering it.

So write down your goals today, pick your decluttering tools and get going!
