I’m guessing you are here because you are finding yourself paralyzed by all the clutter strewn around in your bedroom. The unmade bed. The clothes lying on the floor, the chair and the bed. That messy wardrobe that has totally gone out of control. And your work desk that is drowning in a pile of paper clutter and office supplies.
It’s easy to overlook bedroom clutter because it’s not the primary area of the house. It’s not the first place that will catch the sight of your guests, and you can just close the door to hide the mess from anyone who is visiting over. But no matter how good you are at hiding the clutter, your bedroom is the space where you come back to relax after a tiring day at work. It deserves to be a clutter-free zone that allows you to get a sound sleep.

A messy bedroom is all it takes for anxiety to kick in, and it’s an indication of how your life is being controlled by the clutter surrounding you. And as much as you want to declutter it right away, you might have been finding yourself stuck because you have no idea where to start.
No matter how messy that bedroom of yours is right now, stress is the last thing you should feel. Whether the bedroom is yours or your child’s, I am here to help you out with a step-by-step guide to get it all under control in as little time as possible. So let’s pick up those decluttering tools and get going:
1. Make Your Bed
Bed forms the most important part of your bedroom as it’s the place where you come back to sleep at the end of the day. So it’s important that you make your bed first before doing anything else. Fold the bedding and comforters and keep it all piled up in a corner of your bed.

2. Pick The Obvious Trash
Over time, your bedroom becomes a hub for all the trash that doesn’t belong there. In order to declutter the mess out of your bedroom, start by picking up any trash that is visible to you – chocolate wrappers, shopping tags, paper clutter or used tissue papers. Make it a point to take this trash out before you move on to the next step.
3. Pick Laundry Items
Laundry items cause the most amount of clutter in your bedroom. It’s easy to dump your clothes on the chair after taking a bath. Towels and bath robes are almost always a source of clutter on your bed. So if you’ve dealt with the obvious trash, start picking up your laundry and toss it in the laundry basket. Take this laundry basket away to the laundry room to be washed later or if possible, put your clothes straight into the washing machine.
4. Pick And Organize Small Items
Many items in your room may find their way on flat surfaces making it look more cluttered than it actually is. You bring out a stapler from your drawer and forget to return it back there. This tiny stapler will sit on your work desk for weeks and months and will slowly be accompanied by other objects like punching machine, glue, pens & pencils. Since these items already have a designated place in your room, you can just pick them one by one and return them to their rightful homes.

5. Wipe The Flat Surfaces
As you’ve cleared off the flat surfaces by picking up the random items of clutter lying there, it’s time to utilize this opportunity to wipe and dust the flat surfaces. Spray some liquid cleaner on the surface of your nightstand and wipe it off using a damp cloth. Don’t forget to wipe your work desk, the chair and top of the dresser.
6. Declutter And Organize The Closet
This is going to be the most difficult part of decluttering the mess out of your bedroom. So brace yourself to spend a lot of your time here. Start by emptying out your closet on a surface, which can be your bed or just a table. Start pulling the clothes out of this pile one by one and place them back into the closet. Set aside the clothes that don’t fit you anymore or the ones that are torn or don’t go along with your personal style.
Once you are done organizing your clothes in the closet, pick the clothes that you’ve set aside and drop them off at a donation centre or give them away to a charity.
Get rid of any unneeded pairs of shoes, accessories and handbags. If possible, give these items to a friend or family who might find them useful.
Now move on to decluttering your sock and underwear drawers. Throw out the contents of your drawers in one place and start putting them back one by one. Make it a point to invest in drawer organizers to make it easier for you to find these items when needed. Drawer organizers will also help you in efficiently utilizing the space available in your drawer.

7. Wash Your Bedding Set
Now that your bed is vacant, it’s time to clean it thoroughly. Take off the bedsheet, pillow covers and blanket covers and wash them properly. Take this time to dry clean the mattress and vacuum the hidden corners of your bed. If needed, wipe and dust the surfaces using a wet cloth. Once you’re done with the cleaning part, nicely place the bedsheet on the bed and put back the pillows in their covers.
8. Sweep The Bedroom Floor
Pick a broom and clean every part of the room. Get into the hidden corners like the area behind your bed and dresser. If needed, move your bedroom furniture to do a deep cleaning.
I hope these tips come handy when you start decluttering your bedroom next time. Once you’re done decluttering that bedroom of yours, I am pretty sure that merely looking at it would motivate you to keep it clutter-free.
