My Room Used To Be A Disaster — These Daily Habits Changed Everything

Bedroom is often the messiest and the most stuffed-up territory of the house. The majority of your stuff rests in there making it more prone to clutter than any other corner of the house and the mess can easily get out of hand if you have a busy life with little or no time to organize it. And with kids at home, the problem only magnifies with the room crawling with toys almost all the time.

I, myself am guilty of having an untidy bedroom more often than one can imagine. I rush through the day like I am the busiest person on this planet while ignoring the mess sitting in the house. There’s always a pile of books lying on the bedside table, a bunch of chocolate wrappers on the floor, many boxes of snacks on the table top and more sets of bedding than I need lying unmade on the bed. Although I make it a point to clean the room every day after breakfast, it doesn’t stay that way for more than an hour. It takes a lot more than just clearing up the visual mess to keep a room decluttered every single day.

Bedroom is supposed to be the place where you can rest after a hectic day at work. You want it to be clutter-free to keep your surrounding peaceful for a good night’s sleep. So here are some decluttering tips and tricks to help you keep your bedroom tidied up every single day:

1. Imagine What You Want Your Bedroom To Look Like

What really helps me to get all that decluttering motivation is having a clear vision of what I want my bedroom to look like. Creating a vision is like having a goal that you need to work towards until it’s completed. When I know that my vision of a perfect bedroom consists of having a perfectly placed bed-sheet, nicely made bed and clean surfaces, it becomes easy to work around that vision.

2. Make Your Bed

Bed is an object that takes up the maximum amount of space in any bedroom. Therefore, it only makes sense if you form a habit to make your bed the first thing in the morning. Even during the day, beds are more prone to becoming the dumping ground for clutter. Things like snack jars, chocolate wrappers, toys, chargers and clothes can easily find their way on to the bed making it look messy and cluttered. Try not to dump things on your bed unless absolutely necessary. Moreover, every time you find anything irrelevant lying on the bed, pick it up and put it where it belongs.

3. Look Around To See What’s Sitting In Without A Purpose

A few years back, my bedroom had a table and a giant chair that I loved sitting in to work. When my desktop wore off, I decided not to invest in another one and went for a laptop instead. A severe back pain further compelled me to do away with the table and instead sit on the bed to work. For the next few months, I didn’t get rid of the chair and the table despite knowing what a waste of space it had become. The chair was being used to hang clothes on and the desk held all the paper clutter. It was only when I truly saw decluttering as the way to a happy home life that I finally got rid of them.

Sometimes, your bedroom unknowingly becomes a junkyard for things you don’t need and love anymore. So get rid of those unneeded furniture items, tattered clothes and excess decor to make the place look aesthetic and clean.

4. Break It down Into Small Tasks

If you expect yourself to declutter the entire bedroom in one go, shed the idea away right now. You’re not a Ninja and decluttering takes time and real efforts to get done with.

Start by breaking it down into smaller tasks – cleaning the flat surfaces and the floor, decluttering the cupboard, dealing with the paper clutter and arranging the books. Focus on just one task at a time, get it done with and move to the other task. Don’t pressurize yourself into doing it all within a day and take motivation from the recently completed tasks to move ahead.

5. Address The Wardrobe

Cupboard is easily the most frequently used space in the bedroom and the one that needs to be tackled with more often. In order to go about decluttering that closet full of junk, make it sure to think hard about what needs to be kept and what it is that you need to get rid of. Do away with clothes that you no longer need or love and those that don’t fit you anymore. Get rid of old jewellery, broken accessories and torn shoes before they start making your closet look more cluttered than it actually is.

6. Sort the Stuff into Three Boxes

A simple decluttering strategy is to sort the items out in three categories – Keep, Throw Away and Sell/Donate. The tough job here will be to decide the best suited category for every item in your bedroom which is why it’s important for you to think wisely as you begin sorting them out.

For the items that you want to keep, bring in the jars and containers for storage and label them properly. For the ones that you wish to donate or sell, maintain proper boxes that can be handed away without must hassle.

Now once you’re done organizing that messy bedroom of yours, make sure you give yourself a pat on the shoulder for having gifted yourself the perfect environment for a good night’s sleep.
