9 Vertical Storage Solutions To Make Your House Look Less Cluttered

I was never a fan of vertical storage solutions because I have always liked plain, clutter-free walls. But 2 years ago, I decided to give them a go and deliberated on which vertical solutions I should invest in. Instead of the wall-mounting organizers or over-the-door storage, I went for solutions that could help me utilize the vertical space in my closets. Needless to say, it turned out to be a game-changer and I managed to shed a lot of my inhibitions. Over time, I made way for a bunch of vertical storage solutions to make my house look less cluttered.

Vertical storage solutions are a great way to maximize the living space, especially if you live in a small home where every inch of area matters. Vertical storage also works great for folks who live in a rented space or in dorms or guest houses. Rented living spaces might restrict you from going for permanent storage solutions like wooden cabinets and cupboards thereby prompting you to go for portable solutions. 

If you think that your home doesn’t need vertical storage because it’s big enough to reside all the extra stuff, let me tell you that vertical storage can be a great way to rearrange your home and organize it well. You can use vertical storage in bathroom cabinets, under the sink, garage and many other areas to utilize the space effectively. 

Here are a few vertical storage solutions that I have invested in over the last few months and that have truly turned around the state of my home: 

1. Stackable Storage Bins

I love stackable storage bins mostly because they are sturdy enough to store a lot of household supplies. I use them in the pantry to organize food items, in the bathroom cabinets to organize the stock of toiletries and in the bedroom to organize painting supplies. You can even use these stacking bins to store kids’ toys, office supplies and clothes in the bedroom.  

2. Shelf Organizers

This is another great way to utilize some vertical space in the shelves by adding more layers to organize your stuff. Shelf organizers are best suited for kitchen because they help maximize the space in cabinets and pantry. 

3. Wall-Mounted Acrylic Shelf

Acrylic shelves work great as spice racks in the kitchen or as makeup rack in your closet. I bought a few of these acrylic shelves 5 years ago when my home was getting renovated, and they have turned out to be lifesavers in every sense. I use them to organize my makeup collection which by the way is huge and it feels great to not have it occupy too much space in my closet. Many people who have visited my home over the last 5 years ended up incorporating this storage solution in their own homes as well. 

4. Over The Door Organizers

Over the door organizers are great for homes where every inch of space matters. If you have a small pantry which doesn’t have enough storage space in it, you can get a wall-mounted hanging rack that can either be put over the door of the kitchen shelf or the pantry. There are many over the door organizers that can be used to store items in the baby nursery, bathroom or bedroom.  

5. Utility Rolling Carts

If you have kids who are always carrying their toys and books around the house, consider having a rolling cart to store all their stuff in one place. Rolling carts are one of the best vertical storage solutions because they don’t occupy too much space. I use a rolling cart to store my cleaning supplies mostly because it is easy to move around. You can even use them as a portable storage solution in your living room or kitchen. 

6. Hooks And Hangers

Hooks and hangers are the age-old vertical storage solutions that are still relevant. I have hooks in my bathroom, in the kitchen and in the closets. I even have a bunch of ceiling hooks in my garage that are used to hang a lot of items, and I just can’t think of an easier way to organize my garage. Hangers are another great way to maximize the closet space in your house. Make sure that you use a lot of hangers and hooks to keep your home organized and clutter-free. 

7. Floating Shelves

If you are looking for a piece of wall décor and a storage option combined in one, look no further. I’ve been using floating shelves for many years to organize the indoor plants in my living room and kitchen. You can even maximize the space on these floating shelves my adding a couple of storage bins on them. Make sure that you don’t end up making these shelves a source of visual clutter by keeping too many items on them. Keep it simple and mess-free. 

8. Ladder Shelves

Ladder shelves can be a great addition to your home if you have limited closet/floor space. You can bring in a ladder shelf for your kids’ room and use it to organize their books, toys and even art & craft supplies. I have a ladder shelf in my living room that has a couple of indoor plants, a mail organizer, a few books, some décor pieces and a newspaper rack. Ladder shelves can also be an amazing decorative storage solution for your bedroom or balcony. 

9. Metal Shelves

Metal shelves are a must-have storage solution for areas like garage and basement. You can put a sturdy metal shelving unit in your basement and use it to store items like holiday décor, unused kids’ toys and many other items. They can even be used to organize sports equipment, painting supplies, gardening tools and a lot of heavy items in your garage. Make sure that you are organizing and maintaining these metal shelving units on a regular basis.
