Caramelised onion toasts are one of my go-to snacks when I’m hungry around midday or want something light for breakfast. They’re flavorful, easy to make, and take less than 30 minutes. They’re also easy to pack for a picnic or enjoy as a quick snack on the go.
They’re also a quick evening snack for kids or for days when you don’t want to spend much time in the kitchen. You just need toasted sandwich bread and a creamy onion spread. Spread it over the toast, and it’s ready to serve.

I also like that you can make the onion spread ahead of time and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to serve, spread it over freshly toasted bread and enjoy.
They’re also great when I have guests over. I like serving them for game day, movie night, or whenever I want an easy savory snack.
How to Make Caramelised Onion Toast
INGREDIENTS:
- 8–10 slices sandwich bread
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 cup finely diced onion
- 1 tsp grated garlic
- Salt, to taste
- ½ tsp black pepper, or to taste
- ½ tsp red chili flakes
- ½ tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp mixed herbs
- 1½ tbsp finely chopped fresh coriander
- 1 cup milk
- 3–4 cheese slices, or ½ cup grated cheddar cheese

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. In a pan, melt butter. Add the diced onions and sauté for about 2 minutes. Add the grated garlic and cook for another 2 minutes.

2. Add salt, black pepper, red chili flakes, oregano, and mixed herbs. Stir well. Then add the chopped coriander. Cook until the onions turn golden brown and soften.

3. Pour in the milk and stir continuously until the mixture comes to a gentle boil.

4. Add the cheese slices or grated cheddar and stir until melted and smooth.

5. Transfer the caramelised onion mixture to another bowl and let it cool for about 30 seconds.

6. Toast the bread slices. Spread a layer of the caramelised onion spread over each slice.

7. Sprinkle with chopped coriander and red chili flakes before serving.

Serve and Enjoy!
Important Recipe Notes:
- You can prepare the caramelised onion spread in advance and gently reheat it just before serving. Toast the bread just before serving so it stays crisp.
- Fresh and soft sandwich bread works best for this recipe. You can keep the crusts on or remove them.
- Once you add the cheese, cook only until it melts and the mixture becomes smooth and creamy. If you cook it for too long, the spread can get too thick and stick to the pan.
- As soon as the cheese has melted and the spread is smooth, transfer it to another bowl. This keeps the mixture from thickening further in the hot pan.
