Crispy Potato Bites

I like having a little snack during the day, and these crispy potato bites are something I make at least once a week. They’re quick to make and are great for last-minute visits from friends or relatives, or even for a simple evening tea at home.

I also make them for game day, a quick lunch, or when I want a simple snack without making much. They’re crispy on the outside, soft inside, and seasoned with oregano, chili flakes, and fresh coriander.

I like serving them for movie nights, family get-togethers, or a simple evening snack. They’re best when served hot, but you can prepare them ahead of time. Shape the potato balls and keep them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to fry them.

How to Make Crispy Potato Bites

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 large potatoes, boiled and diced
  • 4 slices sandwich bread
  • ½ tsp salt, or to taste
  • ½ tsp red chili flakes
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • 1½ tbsp fresh coriander, finely chopped
  • 1½ tbsp corn flour
  • Oil, for deep frying

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Boil the potatoes until soft. Dice them and place them on a large plate.

2. Dip each bread slice in water for about a second, then squeeze out the excess water with your hands. Tear or cut the bread into small pieces.

3. Put the bread, salt, chili flakes, oregano, coriander, and corn flour into the potatoes.

Mix everything together with your hands.

4. Divide the mixture into small portions and roll each one into a ball. Press each ball down a little with a fork and make four marks on top.

5. Heat the oil over medium heat. Carefully add 4–5 potato bites at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 5–6 minutes, turning them occasionally until golden brown all over.

6. Once the potato bites are golden brown and crisp, remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

These potato bites are tasty on their own, but I usually serve them with a dipping sauce. You can use either a homemade dip or a store-bought one. You can also keep things simple with classic ketchup.

Helpful Tips:

  • Squeeze the bread well: Dip the bread in water, then squeeze it well to get rid of the extra water. Too much water will make the mixture sticky and harder to shape.
  • Air-fry for a lighter option: You can air-fry these potato bites instead of deep-frying them. Preheat the air fryer to 385°F, arrange the bites in a single layer, and cook for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  • Make them ahead: Prepare the potato balls and keep them covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to cook. Fry or air-fry them just before serving to keep them crisp.
