Your Home Is Secretly Stressing You Out—9 Decluttering Benefits That Change Everything

There was a time when I used to think of decluttering as a useless activity. And I don’t blame myself for thinking that because after spending an entire Sunday decluttering my bedroom, it would go back to its previous state in less than a day. I was constantly stressing about the way my home looked and didn’t find decluttering as an ideal solution. How was I supposed to reclaim my living space when my efforts didn’t bear any fruits?

But things changed when I started living on my own. As I took charge of my living space, I was met with this crazy instinct of preventing clutter from settling in rather than having to declutter again and again. Rather than letting my books sit on the bed or the chair, I made it a habit to return them to the bookshelf as soon as I was done reading. Although I dined in my bedroom rather than the dining hall, I became habitual of taking the dishes to the kitchen sink as soon as I was done eating.

It took me a while to realize that no matter how often and how much you declutter, clutter won’t go away if you aren’t ready to change your mindset. And once you experience this shift in mindset, you’ll find yourself experiencing the many benefits of decluttering.

If you need motivation to declutter your messy home, here are some of the life-changing benefits of decluttering that will transform the way you maintain your home:

1. More Space Available

Decluttering stuff out of your cupboards, kitchen cabinets, bathrooms, flat surfaces, floors and shelves can help clear out a lot of space that was previously being occupied with stuff that wasn’t adding value to your life. Now that you have more space available in your home, you can either choose to keep it vacant to allow your stuff to breathe or fill it up with things that add value to your life.

2. Sound Sleep

Did you know that clutter affects the quality of your sleep at night? More the clutter you surround yourself with, lower will be the quality of your sleep. Clutter builds up in your mind and body and can make you feel anxious while sleeping. Think of it as the noise that obstructs your sleep, except that the noise caused by clutter is inaudible. But that doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Now try clearing off all the extra clutter from your bedroom. Take away the clothes strewn around to the laundry, declutter your closet, clear off your work desk and floors of any unwanted items. You’ll be amazed by how this little task can impact the quality of sleep you get.

3. Peaceful Home

Clutter causes distractions and makes it harder for you to carry out the regular activities in your home. If your kitchen countertop is cluttered with excess décor items and utensils, you will find it hard to cook in peace. A cluttered living space invites critters and cockroaches that have the power to make your space unliveable. Clutter makes way for a lot of negativities, tangible and intangible, that take peace away from your home. And when you get rid of clutter, you make way for peace that makes your home a perfect place to retreat to at the end of the day.

4. Makes It Easier To Find Stuff

Decluttering your home means that you get rid of a lot of stuff that isn’t adding value to your life. And when you have less stuff to deal with, it becomes easier to find things in your house.

For instance, if you’ve gotten rid of 40% of the clothes sitting in your closet, you’ll be left with lesser number of clothes to sift through every morning to find something to wear.

5. Easy To Maintain your Home

Organizing your things becomes easy when you have less stuff to deal with. When there are lesser number of shoes residing in your shoe rack, you will want to declutter it more often because it isn’t as time-consuming as it was earlier. Less clutter means less time spent on cleaning and tidying up your house which helps save time and energy to carry out other important tasks.

6. Makes Your Home Guest-Friendly

If your home has less clutter, you’ll have less to clean before the arrival of guests. A minimalist home makes it easier for you to keep it well-maintained at all times. Even if a guest arrives on a short notice, you will have to do nothing more than just picking up random items of clutter lying on the floor and the flat surfaces which is not likely to take more than a few minutes.

7. Leaves More Time And Energy For Other Tasks

Cutting down on clutter also means that you will be cutting down the time and energy that was otherwise spent on cleaning and decluttering your house. Now imagine what all you can do with all this time and energy. You can spend more time doing things that you love and the ones that add value to your life.

8. It’s A Form Of Self-Care

Decluttering, over the years, has evolved to become an act of self-care because it makes way for positive energy to enter your home and your mind. It allows you to simplify your home and your life of all the unnecessary stuff that was creating noise in your head.

Imagine how big a favour you’ll be doing yourself by getting rid of the sentimental items that were holding you down and reminding you of your bitter past. And the amazing sense of gratitude you will feel by appreciating the stuff that remains after decluttering. Donating excess stuff is another act of self-care that can make you feel good about what you are doing for the needy.

9. More Money

It takes money to buy stuff and it takes even more of that to maintain it. Your clothes need dry cleaning and appliances need repairing. By getting rid of unnecessary items, you will save money that was otherwise being spent on storing, maintaining and cleaning all the extra stuff.

I hope these benefits of decluttering motivate you to declutter your home with a newer outlook. Although intangible, these benefits will inspire you to kickstart your decluttering journey right away.
